NO TURBINES IN LAKE ONTARIO BECAUSE...
THE ECONOMICS DON'T WORK... Do YOU want to pay more than double for your power? Wind Power does this. THE TORONTO HYDRO PROJECT WILL PUT 60-100 BEHEMOTH TURBINES JUST OFFSHORE (NEAR SHORE) 1.2- 2 KM CLOSE, AND PROVIDE MAYBE POSSIBLY 1% OF TORONTO'S HYDRO IF OPERATING IN PRIME CONDITIONS. Most wind turbine projects operate at around 20% of peak. Two wind assessments have already determined there is NOT enough wind at this location. Does this sound like good economics to you?
Aren't you tired of Ontario's economic waste?
HEALTH CONSEQUENCES ARE ALREADY EMERGING INTERNATIONALLY AND IN ONTARIO
Please see the web sites provided in our materials so that you can be sure that YOU and your family will not be collateral damage to wind turbines in our area (Nina Pierpont: Wind Turbine Syndrome)
ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION
Bird and bat kills are common features of turbine installations. Lake Ontario is clearly a migratory route and a nesting area for tens of thousands of creatures. Toronto also enjoys the Carolinian Forest at this site, which is 1% of Canada's remaining forest space, and which houses more than 50% of bird species in Canada. Try to imagine the distruption to nature.
FRAGILITY OF THE CLIFFS and THE LAKE BED
Try also to imagine the fragile cliffs subjected to heavy machinery, disruption of natural flows of wind, disruption of the lake bed during construction and ten to fifteen years later, during decommissioning...are there any rules yet for decommissioning? Not that we know of! The lake bed contains toxic settled sediments, which may also be disrupted and enter drinking water supplies.
CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL CONSIDERATIONS
The Scarborough Bluffs are of huge cultural and historic consequence for all of Toronto and beyond. The Bluffs contain rare molluscs that are studied internationally, and studies are under way to delermine how this area may be protected by law in the future under various designations such as establishing the area as a Migratory Bird Sanctuary, or a World Heritage Site.
There are large plans afoot to industrialize the Great Lakes. Each Lake has political forces that are lining up with hundreds of business plans to locate giant turbines in one of the largest remaining reserves of fresh water on the planet (20%). There are also communities lining up around the Lakes to protect this resource from industrialization. Large wind turbine installations are NOT green, and will do nothing to save the planet. Please support us and any other concern that resists industrialization of our fresh water. No where else on the planet are turbines being constructed in fresh water. Why HERE? Where is the caution, and the reason?
-Jacques Cousteau (1910-1997)
